Getting to Tangkahan
Tangkahan is located in the Langkat Regency of North Sumatra, Indonesia, on the edge of the world heritage Gunung Leuser National Park.
Located 4-5 hours drive from Kuala Namu: the main international airport in Medan, you can travel to Tangkahan by bus, taxi, or private car.
See below for more information about Kuala Namu and transport options.
From the Pinang Baris Bus Terminal in Medan, two public buses per day head to Tangkahan: departing at 10am and 1pm. The price per person is 50,000 IDR. Pay direct to the driver when you get off the bus at Tangkahan, not to any individual "guides" at Medan and double check with the driver that your bus is going to Tangkahan. The journey takes between 4-5 hours depending on the weather and road conditions.
Taxis and cars can be arranged on the spot from the airport or in Medan. However, we recommend booking a trusted driver through our Central Tourism Office to ensure fair pricing and safe travels.
FROM BUKIT LAWANG
Tangkahan is also accessible from the tourist hotspot of Bukit Lawang, 3 hours by car or around 2 hours by motorbike.
The road is in bad condition, so the journey is very bumpy and slow going! Jeeps are recommended for comfort, whereas motorbikes are generally faster. Transport between Bukit Lawang and Tangkahan can be arranged through our CTO office or from agents in Bukit Lawang.
